Sally, Kathrin and I visited early this afternoon when Sylvia was alive but unconscious. Sally was on her way to Sylvia's house just a little while ago for a special version of a weekly "holy names" ceremony when she learned that Sylvia had died. They're doing the ceremony anyway tonight - a small group of very close friends gathering together and singing a little and loving a lot.
Here's a photo from our visit last weekend when Sylvia was dozing frequently, but still able to tease and joke with us. She was also able to explain how she managed dying so well. She made a conscious, explicit decision to expect those close to her to welcome invitations to help her. She believed, quite correctly, that many would respond with appreciation and love to the love that she was able to express to those she gathered in.
