Bill Sword gravesite - Princeton Cemetary 6/14/2005
June 14, 2005
[Read aloud by Mary Stewart at the graveside ceremony 9:30AM]
"Today I am in the grave site circle with all of you ---
I had one uncle and he was a great uncle for me --- tears on my face now.
Uncle Bill was always at least one of these:
- interested in me
- challenging and engaging
- welcoming
- including me in activity
- nurturing
That's good for a boy. That was good for me ---
I remember Uncle Bill in blue jeans --- the old boy fifties Levi kind --- you know "relaxed fit". Running the Sunday tackle football games in the early sixties. How many people, how many families put up big, white goal posts in the backyard so the boys could build character and learn football?
I remember his cupped hand handshake --- firm.
In tennis he put a lot of spin on the ball and was always ahead on strategy.
The old sedan that Ral took the cousins out in, coasting the sandy, wooded hills of Cape Cod --- whooping with delight --- forever bonded.
Uncle Bill driving his sons and me in his Cadillac convertible up the New Jersey Turnpike to see Mickey Mantle play --- the Morgan Stanley star.
I am 10012 at Camp Dudley because of my Uncle Bill. Bob Marshall, a guiding saint of my boyhood.
On the drive to Mad River Glen, Uncle Bill quizzed us on American companies.
"Okay boys, name 4 tractor manufacturers."
Why did the Swords have a tractor?
Filming Bill Bradley in Denver a few years ago, I went up to see him and said "I was at Don Meisel's house at a party to send you off to the Olympics. My Uncle Bill organized that party."
There are others here today that we will miss when they are gone. We will miss Bill Sword when he is gone. I miss him now."
